I’d like to talk about how our school is supporting diverse literature and cultural celebrations. We have Black History Month coming up in February and as far as I am aware, our school does not have a history of celebrating Black History (aka: assemblies and other schoolwide events.) How do we celebrate other cultures?) Additionally, my 7th grade daughters have only read books in their Language Arts Classes by white authors. This is not in line with our district’s values of celebrating cultural diversity. How is does our school plan to remedy this by the end of the year?

Alison - Thanks for you comments. I will bring this issue up at our humanities meeting this week, since all language arts teachers should be in the room then. I know that in my own class, we have read stories by African American, Asian American, and LGBQ authors, so it might be just chance for the books that those teachers picked for their curriculum this year. But it is indeed something we should be aware of.

Ali - In App Inventor class the students build an educational soundboard app that plays Martin Luther King, Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech. Also, they upload one of Malcolm X's speeches and images. We discuss why are Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X important figures in American history. We talk and watch videos about the civil rights movement. Usually, students customize their apps and add more information about other civil rights leaders.
